1. Lubricate spark plugs and other engine parts
Dirt and Dust can build up around your spark plugs over time, this can affect their performance. For part of your car repair and maintenance, you can use WD-40 to remove carbon residue, and keep moisture away from spark plugs and spark plug wires.
“WD” stands for Water Displacement. So if your spark plugs are wet or you need to drive moisture away from ignition distributors, WD-40 can help! Ensure the engine is off and cool, and spray WD-40 Multi-Use Product on a clean, soft cloth. Rub over the chosen area, or spray the spark plug wires and the inside and outside of your distributor cap with WD-40. Using WD-40 to repel water is a good way to prevent corrosion and keep moisture away. You can also use it to ease the removal of spark plugs, especially if there is any rust or corrosion.
2. Drive out moisture from flooded engines
As with lubricating spark plugs, the water displacement effects of WD-40 Multi-Use Product can help revive flooded engines. From tractors to cars to lawnmowers, WD-40® Multi-Use Product can displace excess moisture from flooded engines and get them back into working condition, saving you costly downtime. Make sure your engine is turned off, then spray the original WD-40 formula into the carburetor before re-starting the engine. Get back on the road or back to work fast.
3. Protect metal surfaces from rust and corrosion
To protect your metal surfaces from rust, you will need to apply the WD-40® Multi-Use Product onto the rusted metal. Shake your handy can of WD-40® well before use. Then, using the wide spray nozzle, saturate the rusted metal with the spray. Leave the product to settle on the rust. Using your wire brush, scrub the rusted area that has the roughest grain and gradually move to the more minor rusty metal areas. Pay attention to not cause additional damage to the metal, using caution and a steady hand. When you have scrubbed the rust away, grab a rag or shop towel to wipe away excess WD-40® Multi-Use Product and rust. Ensure all loose rust has been removed and apply another layer of WD-40® Multi-Use Product to help prevent the corrosion from returning. Regularly re-apply a layer of WD-40® to ensure your metal remains rust-free!
4. Protect your alloy wheel rims
Pre-wash and remove any loose dirt on the rims using a soft-bristled brush and a specialized car wash soap. Use the brush, especially around the spokes, to help clear the wheel’s surface and not scratch or dull car paint or chrome finishes. apply the WD-40 Multi-Use Product onto a cloth or shop towel. Begin to rub the entire surface of the alloy wheel, focus on the areas with remaining stubborn grime or brake dust. Please be advised this should be applied using a cloth to avoid getting any on the wheel or brake pads. Wash off the excess dirt and WD-40 solution with a hose until it becomes smooth. Re-apply WD-40 to the nuts and rim, once again with a cloth, for added rust protection.
5. Lubricate auto hood latches and hinges
Take a clean cloth and give the hinges a wipe-down to ensure they’re dirt-free when it comes to applying the product. You may want to wet your cloth when wiping down the hinges. Take your trusty can of WD-40 Multi-Use Product and spray directly on the hinge. Once you have done this, wipe the hinge down with another rag or shop towel. Move the mechanism back and forth to help promote the penetrating action of the lubricant. If you are still hearing squeaks, re-apply WD-40 Multi-Use Product until the area is squeak free!
6. Stop car locks from seizing up in winter
After a long-dormant period, your locks may have accumulated a layer of dirt and dust or possibly even water buildup. Although this may seem harmless, it can damage the lock making it harder for your keys to operate. To begin, spray a small amount of WD-40 Multi-Use Product into the lock mechanism. This will coat the metal components to deter moisture from gathering or pooling and blast out any built up dirt or debris. Allow a few seconds for the solution to set in. Wipe with a cloth and you’ll find that you have now prevented locks freezing for the winter. This also works great for padlocks found on pickup trucks or RV locks.
7. Maintain your license plates
WD-40 Multi-Use Product is pretty useful for maintaining your car’s license plate! Whether you’ve got tree sap, dead bugs, or grit salt from the road, WD-40 will help to break down these easily. Simply spray the innovative formula onto the affected area, and wait for it to soak in. Then, wipe it off with a rag, then rinse with soapy water. The product will also leave your plate with a beautiful shine, and will help to protect it from rust and grime build up in the future! You can also use it to help remove those stubborn nuts and bolts which may have rusted up over the life of your vehicle.
